Globalization

To understand globalization, we first have to agree in a clear definition of what this concept truly is. If we look at a book definition of the concept, it refers to “the processes by which the people of the world become a single world society” this leads us to the belief that globalization is a form of doing things that involve people from all around the world. The most typical example of this phenomenon is the industrial process, this way a smartphone (say for example an iPhone) is designed in the United States, the materials come from Africa, and the manufacturing is done in Asia. Globalization is a direct effect from capitalism, in an effort by companies from all around the world to reach the major goal of this economic system: enlarge profit. This way the manufacturing is done in countries with poor labor conditions, so that this labor becomes cheaper, leading to a cheaper product and more sales. This becomes negative because it leads to the exploitation of people where there aren’t good government regulations and decent wages. Its positive side becomes the global growth experimented by the countries that help in this globalized process, for example China wouldn´t be the enormous power that it is today without globalization. We can also ask ourselves about the positive outcomes in global culture exchange thanks to the internet and television, however even as global knowledge is great, we can’t think that the loss of small cultures is a positive thing.
Personally globalization has affected me in how I interact with the world. The internet is a window to different cultures and all kinds of beliefs, this way of consuming media (from all around the world, and from all the possible views) makes it possible to get information more true to the real deal. It also makes it possible to believe that starting a life in another country is not that hard, and thanks to communication, is possible to not leave everything behind.

How Green are you?

The car versus bike debate has been in the public eye for quite a while now, with the bike taking over Santiago more and more every single day. However there is a huge problem that becomes evident whenever a person that’s not used to ride a bike in the city, does exactly that. The problem is that the street is extremely unsafe for people that are no used to ride in it, and the bumpy roads, lack of signs, lack of cycle exclusive roads, and over all angry car drivers just contribute more to the problem. In my opinion the state has focused on architecture and city planning that’s very company, and middle class centric, by prioritizing car only roads. This is very negative for the bicycle users, who contribute to lower the carbon emissions, making life in the city a little bit better for everyone. Even with the risks I personally prefer to ride a bike whenever this is possible, this benefits the city in general and also lets me get in fit, something that’s actually not minor!
Besides from that I don’t do much “green” stuff, most of all I kind of recycle because of the system that we use in my building. This is about throwing the organic garbage through the shaft (a giant tube that has a door in every floor), and the boxes and glass trash (bottles) on a closet that the janitors recycle.

So I, don´t feel im truly green but I try to do more than your average joe

Your future job

I would like to work as a criminal lawyer in the future, as I believe that’s the most interesting part of the law practice. I would definitely like to practice law and not to work on an administrative kind of job; this is because I think that if I’m studying for half a decade, I might as well use what I learned.  I would also like to work on this area as I feel this is the area of legal practice that requires the most reforms as it is the one with the most problems.

As for the work environment as a lawyer I have to work indoors, I would prefer to work on a legal firm for a couple of years, and then I would definitely try to open my own legal firm. I wouldn’t try this on my own however, and I would enjoy having a friend to have a joint venture kind of thing. However if that plan doesn’t work I would definitely like to venture into international law, I firmly believe that it is an outstanding topic, and that much development can be done (and will be needed in that particular area). So If I choose that path I would definitely take a major or something related to international law, so I can work on research or in the government international policies.

Abortion

Abortion has been a wildly controversial topic during the last century, however I believe that there has been a wrong approach to how the state should act based on the principles that our constitution gives us. For example I believe that the state can’t be deciding on what a woman has to do with her body, and making a pregnancy mandatory, is limiting the freedom of choice that we as humans have in relation to our own bodies. That’s why im a believer that abortion should be legal to every woman that wants to have an abortion, considering that illegal abortions are also a very expensive thing for the state, for example, of the many women that try pill abortion, a big portion of them end in urgency because of the bleeding, thus being an extra cost of the state, also with the illegal status, also comes the legal proceeding and the penalty, having to pay the trial and if found guilty the stay in jail. I don’t believe the church has any business with law whatsoever, the state has to be inclusive, and a a country we don´t share one single religion, however everyone is equal at the eyes of the law. Why do I have to be judged for something I don´t believe in?

Music

I believe that there are two kinds of songs, those that are art, and those that are just a mean of business. I’m making this distinction because I believe that both are enjoyable on certain contexts, like dancing to reggaeton on parties is quite fun, but it’s not true art. One popular definition of art says that art are those things that are an end by themselves, an expression of the feeling of the artist with the sole intent, of having that feel on the real world so other people or the artist himself can relate to that. I like to listen to music because it is a unique form of expression; one that can be enjoyed countless times and find different interpretations of what It means every single time. Music is important as a mean of expression, we can see it used to express several things: joy, sadness, love, forgiveness, even patriotism, and politic goals, a world without music is a world without passion, and a world without passion it’s no longer human.  I enjoy listening indie, electronic, an certain kinds of hip-hop, I like Radiohead, LCD soundsystem, Arcade fire and los ases falsos and while I buy cds (I have around ten), most of the music I listen nowadays is via streaming.

The best concert ever

The best concert i have ever been in was Arcade Fire in Lollapalooza this year. I have always been a big fan of them since I first stumbled upon a live presentation of them on a cable channel; I was in 6th grade and loved them instantly, so I promised to myself that when they played in Chile I definitely had to see them. Arcade Fire is a Canadian-Haitian band, and they have a very characteristic sound that varies on every record, so it’s always very exiting when they release a new one. Another thing I love about them is the quantity of musicians playing on songs; the sound on most is just breathtaking.  About the concert itself, it was just amazing. It was at the beginning of April, so it was very hot I saw that there were a lot of people like me that were hardcore fans of the band. When it started I was blown away with the musicians there were like fifteen of them on stage, the stage was full of mirrors and it was just beautiful. The songs sounded amazing and at the end I felt a connection so powerful with the music that is just hard to describe. When I left I remember thinking that it was going to be really hard to get excited for a concert ever again!

Memories

The other day i bought a pack of mitos y leyendas trading cards; these were a new edition of the same game I used to play as a child and as a teenager, so when I opened the pack I felt the awesome smell of brand new cards I was brought back to my childhood days of playing cards in the halls of the school. My first memory consists of several flashes of when I lived in Uruguay (I lived there until I was four), I  vaguely remember the apartment where we lived, but one of my clearest memories of the time Is the image of my dad studying really hard, and kind of getting mad at me because of getting into his study room. My most favorite childhood memory, I believe is playing all week on the street with my pals from the block in Valdivia, I remember how we used to play until it got dark. I actually learned to swim at a quite early age, when I was around four years old, while I lived in Uruguay, however I learned to ride my bike very late, around when I was seven years old. One of my favorite TV shows was kablam on nickelodeon; it had a great variety so it was great! I have always been kind of a geek, so one of my favorite things to do when I was little, was to play on my Nintendo 64, I remember being blown up because of the graphics every single time!
